संसदीय अधिनियम के अधीन गठित भारतीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान, मुंबई की स्थापना वर्ष 1958 में हुई . आज यह संस्थान देश के एक उत्कृष्ट शैक्षिक केन्द्र के रूप में विख्यात है. यह भारतीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान श्रृंखला का दूसरा सबसे बड़ा विश्वविद्यालय है. इसकी स्थापना यूनेस्को एवं सोवियत संघ के अनुदान से हुआ था. यूनेस्को ने सोवियत संघ की सहायता से मशीनरी और तकनीकी ज्ञान उपलब्ध कराया और भारत सरकार ने निर्माण और अन्य खर्चों का वहन किया.
Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay established under the parliamentary act in 1958. Today it is a well known Institution of the country. It is the second greatest University of the IIT series. IIT, Bombay was established with the grant of UNESCO & Soviet Union. UNESCO provide the Machinery & Technical Knowledge with the help of Soviet Union & Govt. of India bear the construction & other expenditures.

Vision
The Vision of IIT Bombay is to be the fountainhead of new ideas and of innovators in technology and science. Its Mission is to create an ambience in which new ideas and creativity flourish and from which research and scholarship and leaders and innovators of tomorrow emerge.
Objectives and Goals
- To provide the best possible educational facilities for training bright students for careers in technology and science.
- To provide a creative atmosphere in which higher studies and research thrive both among the students and the faculty.
- To organise short intensive courses, conferences and seminars on current technological developments which will be of benefit to the surrounding community.
- To provide research and development consultancy, which will promote contact with and be of service to industries and to government and civic organizations
- To organize quality improvement programmes for faculty members from various engineering colleges.
- To provide leadership in curriculum design and development
Location : The IIT Bombay is located at Powai, a suburb in north eastern Mumbai, between the Vihar and Powai lakes.
