पहला भारतीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान (आईआईटी), का जन्म मई 1950 में हिजली, खड़गपुर, भारत के पूर्वी क्षेत्र में हुआ। प्रारम्भिक काल में इस आईआईटी ने 5, इस्प्लैनेड ईस्ट, कलकत्ता से अपना कार्य प्रारम्भ किया तथा शीघ्र ही, सितंबर 1950 में हिजली, खड़गपुर में स्थानांतरित हो गया। इसका वर्तमान नाम ‘भारतीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान’, मौलाना अबुल कलाम आज़ाद द्वारा अगस्त 18, 1951 को संस्थान के विधिवत उद्घाटन से पहले ही स्वीकार हो गया था। आईआईटी खड़गपुर ने अपनी यात्रा पुराने हिजली नज़रबंदी शिविर से प्रारम्भ की, जहां पर कई महान स्वाधीनता सेनानियों ने कष्ट सहा तथा देश की स्वतंत्रता के लिए अपने जीवन का बलिदान किया था। इस प्रकार से आईआईटी खड़गपुर का इतिहास हिजली नज़रबंदी शिविर के इतिहास से गहरे जुड़ा हुआ है। यह सम्भवत: विश्व के कुछ ही संस्थानों में से एक है जिसने अपनी यात्रा किसी कारागार परिसर से प्रारम्भ की हो।

The first Indian Institute of Technology was born in May 1950 in Hijli, Kharagpur, in the eastern part of India. Initially the IIT started functioning from 5, Esplanade East, Calcutta and very soon shifted to Hijli in Sept. 1950. The present name 'Indian Institute of Technology' was adopted before the formal inauguration of the Institute on August 18, 1951, by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. IIT Kharagpur started its journey in the old Hijli Detention Camp where some of our great freedom fighters toiled and sacrificed their lives for the independence of our country. The history of IIT Kharagpur is thus intimately linked with the history of the Hijli Detention Camp. This is possibly one of the very few Institutions all over the world which started life in a prison house. 

आईआईटी खड़गपुर का आदर्श वाक्य है “योगः कर्मसु कौशलम्”। इस आदर्श वाक्य का वास्तविक अर्थ है “कर्म में उत्कृष्टता ही योग है”, जिसका मूल तात्पर्य है कि अच्छी तरह से अपना कार्य करना ही (सत्यतः) योग होता है। इसका मूल स्त्रोत भागवद् गीता में श्रीकृष्ण द्वारा अर्जुन को दिया गया उपदेश है। गीता के महासंदर्भ में यह उक्ति मानव को स्थिर-चित्त प्राप्ति की ओर प्रेरित करती है, क्योंकि ऐसी स्थिर-चित्त आत्मा ही संसार में अच्छे या बुरे कर्मों के फलों का परित्याग करने में सक्षम हो पाती हैं। स्थिर-चित्तता ही कायिक कर्मों में पूर्णता का स्त्रोत होती है एवं अंततः मोक्षगामी होती है।

The motto of IIT Kharagpur is "Yoga Karmashu Kaushalam" . The motto literally translates to "Excellence in action is Yoga" essentially implying that doing your work well is (true) yoga. It is sourced to Sri Krishna's discourse to Arjuna in Bhagavad Gita. This quote in its larger context of Gita urges man to acquire equanimity because such a soul endowed with the mind of equanimity allows him to shed the effects of his good and evil deeds in this world itself. Equanimity is the source of perfection in Karmic endeavors while leading to Salvation.

स्थिति Location :  आईआईटी खड़गपुर कोलकाता शहर से 3 घण्टे की सड़क यात्रा द्वारा या 2 घण्टे की रेल यात्रा द्वारा पहुंचा जा सकता है। खड़गपुर रेलवे स्टेशन से 5 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर संस्थान स्थित है।
IIT, Kharagpur can be reach by either 3 hours road journey or 2 hours train journey. The Institute is situated within 5 km distance from the Kharagpur Railway Station.
